After greeting the rising sun, Kānehoalani, we begin our ascent on the ala ʻūlili, beginning near the sea, the kahakai. These ʻāina in the lowlands are part of the Wao Kanaka, the realm where people engage in the everyday tasks of life, cultivating the land, fishing, building, various crafts, etc. We begin our journey with pule, asking for guidance and protection from our akua and kūpuna, as we set forth on the long, steep trail before us.
