The huiMAU Hub Mission

Video by Dustin Acdal, June 2023

huiMAU hub: Kahi Hānai Kanaka o huiMAU

“Kahi Hānai Kanaka o huiMAU,” can be translated as “the place that huiMAU nourishes / feeds people.” This name is inspired by the moʻolelo of ʻUmi-a-Līloa, the famous chief of Hāmākua, who was well-known for generously feeding and caring for the people of this island, and who established “kahi hānai kanaka o ʻUmi” as a “hub” of community care between Paʻauilo and Laupāhoehoe approximately 18 generations ago.

Kahi Hānai Kanaka o huiMAU is a catalytic community initiative to establish a community resilience hub in Paʻauilo, Hāmākua, Hawaiʻi, to address the current and future needs of our community related to food systems, sustainable economies, and community care. It is a social enterprise and extension of the already established community gathering space.

The Many Springs of Inspiration

Located in the moku of Hāmākua, in the ahupuaʻa of Paʻauilo, and in the ʻili of Waipunalau is the huiMAU hub: Kahi Hānai Kanaka o huiMAU. Waipunalau, meaning an abundance of fresh water springs, is also the name of the palena of the ahupuaʻa, the nearby gulch that ebbs and flows.

The huiMAU hub logo design is meant to mirror nature  – ʻumeke being a symbol for the stewardship of ʻāina and wai being the abundance of programs and resources that the huiMAU hub is able to pour into our community. With many springs of inspiration, our hope is to nourish the generations of people from this place. Our logo design is a reflection of ourselves – where there is healthy ʻāina, there are healthy communities.

Food Kitchen & Distribution Hub

Picture
huiMAU created the Community Kitchen Food Distribution (CKFD) Program out of a sense of kuleana (responsibility/accountability) to share the abundance and hānai kanaka in our community. Throughout the 3 years of the program's existence, CKFD has been a place to gather with each other and share food and stories intergenerationally.

ʻĀina-based Educational Programs

Picture
Our ʻāina-based educational programs include Ka Maha ʻUlu Koholālele, Mālama ʻĀina Koholālele, and KaHua HoAMa. Each program cares for a different region of ʻāina while creating a safe space for youth, ʻohana, and community to rebuild relationships and reestablish food sovereignty. Through the transformation of our ancestral lands, we are transforming the future for many generations to come.
