The design depicts the Hae Kalaunu, the Crown Flag of the Hawaiian Kingdom, as the ʻāina foundation from which the kalo makua grows forth. In the background is the mauna, Maunakea, which embodies the Hā-mākua of our island, the elder stalk and piko from which life, ea, flows down to us all. The text in the design is a replication of the handwriting of Kauikeaouli, in the letter he wrote to Queen Victoria of England on March 10, 1843, protesting Lord George Paulet's wrongful occupation of the islands, and requesting that she "hoihoi mai i ke ea o ka aina" (restore the ea (sovereignty) of the ʻāina) and recognize Hawaiʻi as an "Aupuni Kuokoa," an independent country. Mahalo nui to Kamanamaikalani Beamer for finding this letter and sharing this moʻolelo through his extensive research on our Mōʻī of the Hawaiian Kingdom. The text reads, "e mau ke ea o ka aina," the ea of this ʻāina continues on, honoring Kauikeaouli's famous words on the first Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea, "Ua mau ke ea o ka aina i ka pono!" #EmaukeEa#LHEHamakua2016 #huiMAU
